  • Hello Destiny Wikians,

Over the last few weeks I've been working on a couple of automated programs designed to keep the wiki updated using live data pulled from the destiny API.

Included in these programs is a function designed to check if photos on the API already exists on the wiki, and if it doesn't, the program will upload the photo and mark it as an API image.

For this to work effectively we need to activate the upload from url extension already existing on the wiki. Activation of extensions require community consensus.

I've written this forum to request opinions on activating this extension on the wiki. Please reply with your support/opposition to the motion on this forum.

Please note this extension will be restricted to admins to avoid any possible abuse.

    Thanks, T3CHNOCIDE

    • I don't understand what all of those three letter groups mean. Can you explain them and the effects they have to me?

Hey. Sorry for the confusion. API is the application program interface, essentially it's a method for developers to communicate with Bungie servers and gather information, such as names, images and stats for items, missions, characters etc.

URL is the web address. Uploading by URL allows us to feed a URL to the Wikia servers so they can download the image themselves rather than us having to download the file and upload it ourselves.

Bots are semi automated programs designed to do repetitive wiki editing too large and boring for a human. Most of my bots are written from scratch for the purpose of this wiki.

Thank you very much. In that case, I see no reason not to Support.

      Sounds like a great idea!

If I may ask, how exactly does it detect photos already on the wiki, given that the naming scheme of images on the wiki can vary wildly.

Will that delete my photos that I put?

It'll get responses back from Wikia notifying the bot if there is a duplicate image. This could vary from image which already has that file name or the same image with a different file name.

Right now the bot will not bother uploading if it is already on the wiki with the same file name the bot would have uploaded too, or it'll move the duplicate image to a better file name.

That clears things up, thanks. Only concern is that when duplicates are moved to a better file name, it may break the link to that particular image on the pages that use it.

    • If the bot can create a redirect with the move, that won't be a problem.

Images can have redirects?! Good to know, thanks.

As per SnowWolf the bot will leave a redirect.

Just to let you all know this has been activated and is working perfectly!

    • how much support do we need in order to make this happen?

    • Hi all, I'm really pleased to say that activation of this extension is working really well. You can see it in action on my sandbox where my bot is pulling live information and updating the main page. Each time it pulls an item it doesn't know it adds the image to the wiki.
