Bounties are side missions offered to Guardians by Xander 99-40 in the Tower. The only requirement is that the Guardian must be at least level 4. The bounties require completing particular tasks, such as defeating a certain number of enemies of a certain species or class or killing a certain number of enemies without taking any damage.[1] When the bounty is complete, the Guardian must return to Xander for the bounty reward.

Bounties come in three types: Crucible bounties, which offer Crucible Reputation and experience for accomplishing tasks in the Crucible, Vanguard bounties, which offer Vanguard Honor and experience for tasks accomplished on Patrols, Strikes, or Raids, and Exotic bounties, which provide challenging tasks to acquire Exotic Weapons.[1] Periodically, players can also accept Iron Banner bounties, but only for a limited amount of time. These types of bounties are similar to Crucible bounties, but can only be attempted by participating in the Iron Banner playlist. A player may take on up to ten bounties at once, in any mix of bounties (Crucible, Vanguard, Exotic, etc).[1] Any bounty can be abandoned at any time through the in-game menu.

The Queen's Wrath event introduced a new type of bounties, Reef bounties, that reward reputation with the Queen of the Reef.

Available bounties are refreshed every 24 hours.[2]
